Fedora 41 and Wayland

  • Fedora 41 will ship with Wayland only, no X11 support by default
  • X11 support remains in the repository, can still be installed if needed
  • Explicit sync support in Gnome and latest NVIDIA drivers should reduce compatibility issues

Gnome Foundation

  • Holly Million, executive director of Gnome Foundation, is leaving after 10 months
  • Richard Leow becomes interim director
  • Holly accomplished a lot in her short tenure, including creating a plan for the future and finding funding avenues

Cosmic

  • Only 20 issues to resolve before alpha release
  • New features include styling inactive windows, settings page for keyboard shortcuts, ALT tab feature, and display mirroring
  • Compositor is now multi-threaded, should perform better with multi-monitor setups and high refresh rates

Gnome 47

  • Default font will likely be replaced with Inter, a maintained and open-source font
  • Experimenting with font size
  • HDR-related improvements, including ability to display HDR and SDR content side by side
  • Nautilus will be used as the file chooser
  • Global keyboard shortcuts feature is being implemented
  • Notification portal spec is being implemented

Lawsuit against GitHub Co-Pilot

  • Part of the lawsuit was dismissed, but another part will proceed
  • Claim that GitHub Co-Pilot breaches open-source licenses of code it used will go to court
  • Could result in AI tools having to follow attribution and licensing rights

Epic Games and Apple

  • Epic Games’ App Store was initially rejected by Apple due to similarities with Apple’s store
  • Apple eventually approved the store, but told Epic that changes would still be required
  • Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, criticized Apple’s restrictions

  • DXVK update (version 2.4) brings support for DirectX 8
  • Improvements to memory usage, AMD GPU support, and game-specific fixes
  • Bottles app update adds support for latest DXVK version and improves performance
  • Valve refines game recording feature in Steam beta, including clip editing and screenshot saving
