What is FAST VP or Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools?

In today blog we understand about the FAST VP and how it is helpful in the IT world. You are dealing with the lots of data and you are not sure which solution to go with one with the all flash but if you go with the all flash solution it is great but it will be costly and here you are not saving money and also you system don’t need that extreme performance. So in order to tackle this problem we have the fast VP. A advance and automated solution to move the data as per there uses.

What is Fast VP?

In a storage array we are dealing with the lots of drives like we have SSD or flash drives, we have SAS drives and we also have the SATA drives but how we can determine which drive to use for that we can take help of the FAST VP.
FAST VP stand for the Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools. So in this we can arrange the drives as per you data need. We categories our data and as per the we store that. So we have following tier the storage system.

  • Extreme Performance Tier
  • Performance Tier
  • Capacity Tier

Extreme performance tier

It usually consist of the flash and the SSD drives. Here we have the hot data or the active data, That mean that day we access almost every time we store that data in the extreme tier and don’t worry you need not to manually put your data in this tier. based on the usage system decided and categories the data.

Performance Tier

It consist of the 10k and 15k SAS drives that are usually god for the performance and capacity and data that is not we that often will be store here. so the retrieval will be easy. And this will recalculate after some time and move the data accordingly.

Capacity Tier

Its consist of the SATA or the near line SAS(NL SAS) like 7.5K drives that are good for the capacity and are not that great solution for the performance.

Data Relocation

The moment of the data from the one tier to another tier is known as relocation. Its all relocate based on the tiering policy( A policy based on which relocation happen). There are few states in the data relocation.

  • Ready -> Data is ready to relocate
  • Relocating -> Data is being relocated
  • Paused -> all the data relocation is paused

Types of data

  • Hot data
  • Cold data

Hot data

It is a data that is heavily use so it usually lie in the Extreme Performance Tier and the performance tier.

Cold Data

As the name suggest it the cold mean that data is not use often and usually lie in the capacity tier
